IBM Selects Firefox as Default Browser for its Staff

In a blog post, IBM's Bob Sutor explains why IBM has selected Firefox as its default browser for all their staff.

This is a monumental endorsement for the Mozilla Firefox browser and I am sure it will have ripple effects throughout the whole IT world.

Bob lists some of the reasons IBM is opting for Firefox are:

  • Firefox is stunningly standards compliant, and interoperability via open standards is key to IBM’s strategy.
  • Firefox is open source and its development schedule is managed by a development community not beholden to one commercial entity.
  • Firefox is secure and an international community of experts continues to develop and maintain it.
  • Firefox is extensible and can be customized for particular applications and organizations, like IBM.
  • Firefox is innovative and has forced the hand of browsers that came before and after it to add and improve speed and function.

That a company of IBM's size and history is backing Firefox is going to be very interesting to follow. Particularly I am very interested to hear the official comments from Microsoft, Google and Apple regarding this news.

Wouldn't surprise me if some of them thought it was April 1st when reading it...
